The Ups and Downs of PhD Semester 1!

Wow. Somehow in the whirls of life in Worcester, I lost track of this blog. So here's a brief update of life in New England.
I read a lot. I write a lot. Most days that sums it up pretty well. On occasion I've been out hiking in the beautiful fall forests or apple picking. I've gotten acquainted with the local pub, found the "greenie" grocery stores and a good Indian restaurant. I've fallen into a pretty typical New England student lifestyle.
I don't think about Africa as often as I expected. In the beginning it was constantly there, like something was missing. I think that's part of why I stepped back from writing here. I needed some distance from the old home- mentally as well as literally.
Up until a few weeks ago, I was counting the weeks until summer vacation when I plan to go back. But I've lost count. I started reading the NY Times and the South African Mail & Guardian equally often. I now know more about the upcoming American elections than the South African ones.
For months, I felt like this was surreal -- that real life was waiting for me back in southern Africa.
Now, six months back in the States, I'm not so sure.
