A taste of the holidays

Tonight, K-State plays my California Golden Bears. Much love to the Wildcats, but I plan on rooting my Alma matter. I still have some concerns about our current line-up on the hardwood, but it should be an interesting game. I hope.
Last week, my honey and I made Thanksgiving lunch/dinner for our nuclear family. I wanted to stay away from the traditional turkey - since I didn't think the three of us could polish of a bird. Instead, I went back to my dad's cooking and whipped up chicken adobo and Indian potato patties. I don't think I could type out my dad's recipe for adobo because a lot of the measurements and ingredients are tossed into the pot by instinct. I really should make an effort to keep track of what goes into this dish...someday. When I was growing up, some of my part-time jobs required working over the holidays. So my family got used to doing Thanksgiving dinner at lunchtime. Mark worked on the sides and baked a tasty pumpkin pie for dessert. He also mixed up a sweet Hennessy syrup to drizzle over slices of pie.
Typically, we don't feed my baby from the table. But it was a holiday. So, we said grace and asked her what she was thankful for and she did her best to stop herself from jumping at our legs while we worked in the kitchen. Such an angel!
So we made this amuse bouche for her. Granted, I think any morsel of food would made her happy, but I'd like to think these flavors helped satisfy her palate. I added some chopped up hot dogs in case she didn't like my chicken. But she wiped her bowl clean.
I'm a little bummed about missing out on the $25 two-GIG flash drives at Office Max on Black Friday. Our IT dude told me about this sweet deal at work - but I was pooped from the mental and physical juggling for our live shot at Best Buy. I had to get the video of the doors opening edited for our morning show. So, I met up with our photog at the store to pick up the camera cards. I stood behind him as he shot the hundreds of people marching through the doors to the sounds of some bad dance music piping out the PA system. I felt random hands reaching in front and back of me to grab shopping carts. Then I had to swim against the tide of people to get out of the store. I got lucky and managed to park near the entrance. When I left the strip mall, I flagged another driver over to my empty space. I also got lucky with traffic lights on Wanamaker Road - nothing but green, baby. It's a rush to race against a deadline and beat it. But I'd rather do it on a full stomach. I felt stuffed from our Thanksgiving lunch at the beginning of my graveyard shift. Then my stomach reminded me I skipped dinner during the last hour of the show. Black Friday kicked my butt -- and I just wanted to curl up at home with the latest episode of Top Chef.
Ah food...I love to cook - but sometimes I don't have the energy or time to make a meal from scratch. I'm tickled about the many take-out options here in the Capital City...several that go beyond fast-food burgers and pizza pies. When I first moved to Topeka, Keith recommended Globe Indian for its great lunch buffet. This downtown restaurant also had a great selection of user-friendly dishes and it’s ideal for folks who haven’t tried Indian food. Plus, for someone looking for a hearty take out meal, Globe Indian lets us order up a feast over the phone.
For take out, we usually order this non-vegetarian dinner for two. The vegetable samosas are stuffed with spicy peas and potatoes. The rogan josh has tender lamb morsels swimming in a creamy sauce and dotted with nuts and raisins. And everything tasted yummy with the naan and rice. This is my comfort food when we want to stay home and curl up with the Colbert Report, Buffy the Vampire Slayer,Battlestar Galatica or plow through episodes of Neon Genesis.

Very funny about the dog or Daisy eating in the table. I used to be so jealous when I was young because my father used to spoil our dog by giving him food during the family dinner. I resented it(maybe jealous of the attention) secretly, but I did not say anything. This is probably the reason why when I had a dog, I never feed him during a family dinner.
Anyway, I think Daisy's food is more appealing than the Indian food, curry does not appeal to me very much.
One positive thing about this blog, when you flagged somebody for your parking space. That's very nice of you Kris. I'm always grateful when somebody did that for me. Happy Holidays to you and to all of your co workers at 49NEWS.
