Lost 4.09 The Shape of Things To Come
Posted Thursday, April 24, 2008
Lost is finally back after 5 weeks of nothing good on TV. It's a curse and a blessing to have it back. I don't like this new time slot, since I have to be at work at 3:30 in the morning it's really tiring to stay up to watch the new episode, and I can't pay as close of attention as I would like because I am starting to fall asleep. I made it through, and I think I picked up on everything. Let's deal with the beach since there wasn't as much going on there.
When Is Relative
Jack took antibiotics for a "stomach bug"; Kate asked him why Desmond and Sayid had not yet returned from the freighter. Vincent was heard barking in the background along with Bernard's cries for help. When everyone went to investigate, they saw a body washed ashore. Jack and Bernard pulled the body from the water. Daniel revealed the body was Ray, the freighter's doctor. His throat was slit. Jack asks Daniel when the last time he saw him and Daniel says that when is relative. Daniel partially repaired the satellite phone, enough to communicate in Morse code. He transmitted "what happened to doctor?" and the freighter replied. Daniel informed Jack the response was "friends are fine. Helicopters coming in the morning." Bernard knew Morse code, and pointed out Daniel's lie, stating the reply actually said, "What are you talking about? Doctor is fine." Were the people from the boat lying? Or do they really not know that the doctor has been killed and thrown overboard? Then under pressure from an angry Jack, Daniel revealed the freighter never planned to rescue anyone from the island, which left Jack stumbling away, upset and in apparent pain. I think the stomach pain is because he didn't listen to Locke and his body is fighting the fact that Locke was right. Really it looks like we'll be dealing with Jack's stomach issues next week. That's what stress will do to you.
Code 14J
Alex was captured by a group of five mercenaries from the freighter, led by Martin Keamy. They removed her blindfold, and revealed they were at the edge of the sonic fence surrounding The Barracks. They ordered her to deactivate the fence, which she tearfully did (the code is 1623). Over in Locke's camp, Sawyer, Locke and Hurley played Risk, when the phone suddenly rang. Locke picked up the receiver and heard a computerized voice repeating "Code 14J". Ben was playing piano when Locke and Sawyer barged in and asked what the code meant. This sent Ben into a frenzy. He opened the piano seat and grabbed a shotgun, and once he arrived back at Locke's (Ben's old) house he immediately started blockading and closing all the entrances. In response to Locke's demands for information about what was going on, Ben yelled, "They're here!” Ben also tells Locke that he needs to live, so stay close to Ben.

Sawyer made an attempt to get Claire into the blockaded house, despite Ben's warnings to not go outdoors. Shortly after exiting, the whole area was torn apart by unseen gunfire coming from the tree-line. Three other people close to Sawyer were killed attempting to run, in total 3 red shirts were killed, including one that was actually wearing a red shirt. Sawyer managed to dodge the hail of gunfire and worked his way to Claire's house, just in time to see it get destroyed by an RPG. The gunfire suddenly stopped soon thereafter. Sawyer searched through the rubble of the house and found Claire, scratched up but conscious and apparently uninjured. Sawyer picked her up and ran back toward the house, where Ben again strongly warned the others not to let him inside. Hurley refused to let that happen, and threw an ottoman out of a window so that Sawyer and Claire could enter through the broken window.

Shortly afterwards, the doorbell rings, and Sawyer unblocked and opened it to find Miles waiting there with a walkie-talkie he said the mercenaries gave him. Ben initially refused to talk to the mercenaries until he heard they had Alex hostage. At that point, he immediately picked up the radio, and Keamy instructed him to look out the east window, where he was standing. After telling Keamy he knows about Uganda and exactly what kind of man Keamy is, Keamy dropped the formalities, brought in Alex, and held her at gunpoint. He instructed Ben to walk out the front door and no one in the house would get hurt. Ben refused, and issued a counter-offer, instructing the mercenaries to turn around, leave, and to forget the island. Keamy advised Ben that he had 10 seconds to walk out of the door before he killed Alex. As he counts down, Ben said that Alex meant nothing to him as he took her from an "insane woman", and that she was just a pawn, which Alex heard in utter anguish. Before even reaching the count of one, Keamy shot Alex in the head, leaving Ben speechless, in total shock. Ben was obviously tried to call his bluff, or save her by claiming she didn't mean anything to him. This is very hard to do with Ben.

Ben muttered that "he changed the rules" and quickly activated a secret room in the house wall and vanished before Sawyer could stop him. The walls were made of stone and the door seemed to appear to be carved with some sort of hieroglyphics. The interior of this room was not shown except for a yellow light coming out of it. Moments later, Ben emerged covered in dirt. He ordered everybody to run for the tree-line on his command. A rumbling was heard and the Monster thundered into the camp and then plunged into the tree line. Screams were heard as it attacked the mercenaries in the woods. After the Monster left, Ben ordered the Barracks evacuation, with Claire, Aaron, Hurley, Sawyer, Miles, Ben and Locke apparently the only survivors of the mercenary attack.

Ben briefly remained to lay Alex to rest, and soon met up with the rest of the group. Sawyer, visibly frustrated, decided to leave for the beach, and took Miles, Claire, and Aaron with him. He also tried to get Hurley to come, but Locke pulled a gun on Sawyer and insisted Hurley stay as Locke and Ben believed Hurley was meant to guide them toward Jacob's cabin for further instruction. Sawyer and Locke had a standoff at gunpoint, but Hurley talked them into putting away their weapons and remained with Locke and Ben. So will Hurley be able to lead them to Jacob's cabin? I like this new Sawyer; he's really grown as a character. The fact that he is being protective of Claire and Hurley when 2 years ago he wouldn't have cared just shows this.
Ben Definitely Has Plans
Ben wakes up in a state of wide-mouthed shock on the floor of The Sahara Desert wearing a parka with a new DHARMA logo and the name Halliwax on it. His right arm has a deep cut on it. He gets sick on the ground, and two armed Bedouins on horseback approach. Ben asks them if they speak English, and when he gets no reply, he asks them if they speak Arabic, and then Turkish, but they still do not speak with him. As one searches him he feels a club in Ben's pocket. Ben spins around, beats him and takes his gun, then shoots the other. The beaten one says "surrender," and Ben retorts, "So you do speak English." He then hits him with the rifle butt. Ben ties off his arm wound and rides off on one of their horses. How did he end up in the Sahara in a parka? And it's a Dharma parka. Looking at the logo on the jacket, it seems to be from the Orchid Station. More proof to this is the fact that the name Halliwax is on it. The question becomes if he did use the Orchid, did it just teleport him, make a duplicate or did he travel through time? A little lost? Watch this video and it will make more sense...or course not too much more this is Lost that we are talking about.
Ben checks into a hotel in Tozeur, Tunisia. The desk clerk asks if it is his first time in Tunisia, but he assures her he has been there before even though "it's been a while". He gives the name of Dean Moriarty and introduces himself as a "preferred guest". He asks the clerk the date to which she answers October 21st. Ben clarifies the year, "2005?" which the clerk confirms with a somewhat confused look. Ben spots Sayid on the TV, hounded by the press, who is heading off and "just wants to bury [his] wife in peace".

So Ben heads to Tikrit, Iraq, we see emerges from an SUV branded "PRESS" and slips up a stairway to the top floor. He pulls a camera with a zoom lens from a bag and snaps a photo of a man watching the funeral procession for Sayid's wife, Nadia. Sayid finally found and married Nadia!! Sayid spots Ben, who hurries back down stairs. In the street, Sayid assaults Ben, thinking he is paparazzi. Ben tells Sayid he left the island via Desmond's sailboat, the Elizabeth, and after landing at Fiji chartered a plane. He says he slipped into Iraq from Syria. He also explains that the man at the procession, who he identifies as Ishmael Bakir, was sent by Charles Widmore to kill his wife in Los Angeles. She was apparently killed three blocks from the corner of La Brea and Santa Monica five days earlier. Sayid vows to kill the man. Ben is watching the man in a cafe and follows him to an alley. He turns on Ben, who asks him to carry a message to Widmore. Just then, Sayid shoots him multiple times, continuing to pull the trigger even after his clip is empty. Ben tells him not to succumb to anger over the murder, but Sayid wants revenge, asking "who's next?" Ben vows to contact him and walks away with a smile. If Charles Widmore actually killed Nadia, is inconsequential. It gave Ben the opportunity to recruit Sayid for his little war.

Late at night in London, Ben emerges from a taxi, and enters a building. He tricks the doorman, claiming to be heading to visit a Mr. and Mrs. Kendrick in apartment 4E, but instead picks the elevator lock to enter the penthouse. Here, he enters Charles Widmore's bedroom. Ben inquires as to when Widmore started sleeping with a scotch by the bed. Widmore, who has used a British accent in the past, replies using an Australian accent, (which could be un-intentional) "When the nightmare started". Nightmares? Ben admits he "can't" kill Widmore, and accuses Widmore of killing his daughter. The two argue about who bears responsibility, and Ben vows to kill his daughter, Penelope, to bring him the same pain. Widmore claims to know "what" Ben is, saying everything he has he took from Widmore. Ben says Widmore will wish he hadn't "changed the rules.” Widmore counters that Ben will never find her and that he wants "his" island back. Ben says he will never find the island, and that the hunt is on. Other than the fact that Ben is pissed at Widmore because of Alex's death, and that there is a rivalry between the two of them, I had no idea what they were talking about through this whole conversation. There is obviously a past, and the scene was so vague that I'm not even going to try and theorize anything.
So this is the shape of things to come? If that mean that it will be action packed and full of information I'm all for it. The only thing that was "slow" was Ben's calculated words. I can't wait for next week. Until then,
Namaste!
