Moderator: Hi. This is the fourth and final Oscars chat with Film Critic Keith Van Sickle. He's here today to talk about last night's Oscar upsets and memorable moments. Let's get started.
kveraphillips: Pan's Labyrinth was robbed last night! I was rooting for it to win best foreign film. How could Germany's "The Lives of Others" upset the one of the best films of the year??
Keith Van Sickle: I agree completely as Pan's Labyrinth was not just the best foreign film, but one of the best of the year overall. This was the one real travesty of the evening. It's just another one of those unexplainable happenings the Oscar's is known for. Labyrinth will be a movie that will be discussed 20 years from now and its longevity will be its overall reward.
DTrain: What's the deal with Jack Nicholson's bald head? Is it for a role or has Jack gone nuts?
Keith Van Sickle: A little from column A and a little from column B. Actually Nicholson shaved his head for an upcoming role and it's not his tribute to Britney Spears.
Moderator: What role Keith?
Keith Van Sickle: Nobody knows. All the ever-elusive Nicholson said in passing it was for a movie role.
hnelson: Have you seen the foreign film winner "The Lives of Others"? Obviously a lot of people feel that Pan's Labyrinth was robbed, but I've heard good things about the German film and wondered if you'd been able to compare them.
Keith Van Sickle: I have not seen "The Lives of Others." It was the only film in that category that I did not get to see. With that being said I can't judge it but it's hard for me to believe that it's superior to Labyrinth.
DTrain: Why was The Queen nominated for best picture when it was just O.K? There were a lot better films that deserved the nomination.
Keith Van Sickle: The Queen was on my top ten list, and I thought it was an outstanding movie. I didn't have a problem with its nomination, but I would have had either United 93 or Pan's Labyrinth somewhere in the running instead of Babel.
Moderator: Little Children received several nominations. I'm curious about that movie. What's it about? Is this the break-out role for Jackie Earle Haley?
Keith Van Sickle: It's quite a comeback for Haley who many remember from the original Bad News Bears from the 1970s. He was delivering pizzas when he decided to give acting another shot. In the movie Haley plays a pedophile who attempts to work his way back into society.
Moderator: One of 49's movie fanatics looked up this little tidbit: According to IMDB.com Jack's filming a movie right now called The Bucket List, which is about two terminally ill men. That's why head could be shaved. He also asks, Was The Departed really good enough to win three Oscars?
Keith Van Sickle: Yes it was that good, but it's not the best film from Scorcese, who's past work is even better than The Departed. I highly recommend the movie. However, I still think it was the best from 2006.
DTrain: What actress did you think looked the best last night? I thought Reese Witherspoon looked hot
Keith Van Sickle: This is not my field, but Witherspoon did look great as did Penelope Cruz and Nichole Kidman. Remember, if you saw how I dress, you'd realize I'm no fashion magnet.
shekittycat: what about Ellen... how did you think she did?
Keith Van Sickle: She was great, very laidback and natural. This was a weird year because there was no running joke for her to use. There was no Russell Crowe beating up a hotel worker, no Jack Palance doing push ups. Ellen's little moment where she dropped the script off to Scorcese was funny, as was her segment where she was vacuuming the front row. I hope she is asked back.
Moderator: Where you surprised at the upset in Best Supporting Actor category? And is Alan Arkin Oscar-worthy?
Keith Van Sickle: Little Miss Sunshine was my sentimental choice the whole night because it's such a special little film. I felt that Arkin won for his role in the film, but also for his entire career of work. It was a surprise because I thought Murphy had it locked up tight, but I was wrong.
Moderator: That's all the time we have for this chat. Keith must get home now and get some rest after a late night of Oscar watching and early morning of Oscar analyzing. Keith appeared on Good Morning Kansas this morning.
