Moderator: Hi. This is Lisa Coble-Krings, and I'll be the moderator today. We're talking with 49's own Jessica Lovell about men's health and a series of stories she's doing about the topic. Ask her a question about why she says men don't go to the doctor. So, Jessica what's the big deal men have with facing health issues?
Jessica Lovell: I was actually suprised to find that men really don't want to know what's wrong with them. I also found they assume their ailments will just get better with time. As we all know, that's usually not the case. Men also told me that their spouses are usually the ones to make them go. Nagging could be a life saver in some cases.
oread: At what age should men start seeing a doctor for routine physicals? I'm in my late 20s and pretty healthy, but I figure one of these days I should start getting regular checkups. Any pointers?
Jessica Lovell: As you know there are certain screenings like prostate and colon that should be performed at 50...unless you have a family history. A lot of men also get yearly physicals as well. Just like women do. But you know your body the best so if something doesn't seem right. Check it out! Wouldn't you rather know than be faced with something that's untreatable?
Moderator: Last week, Jessica talked with a doctor about why men don't go to the doctor. Tonight, she tackles a tough subject of men and depression. Jessica, I hear you met a man who was severely affected by depression. What is that like and how hard was it to get him to open up?
Jessica Lovell: I spoke with a man named Eric. He has suffered from severe depression for a long time. He was very open and willing to talk. He really wants to help other poeple suffering from depression and help people understand what it's like living with this everyday. He was a great interview I must say.
Moderator: Cool. Can't wait to meet him in your story. 49 News will broadcast that story tonight on 49 News at 10. Tune in Wednesdays at 10 throughout the month of May to hear from Jessica and learn about issues impacting men's health.
Moderator: We're going to go ahead and close this chat for today. There'll be more opportunities to chat live with Jessica on Wednesdays right here on 49abcnews.com.
