The Grandparent/CareGiver Support Group will be located in the Security Benefit Pavilion at the Zoo providing arts and crafts activities for the young and young at heart are planned.
All Grandparents on this day will admitted free with one paid admission.
The Grandparent/CareGiver Support Group will have information available regarding grandparents and other relatives raising grandchildren and on their Topeka Grandparent/CareGiver Support Group. Local and state agencies have been invited to participate and provide information on services they provide. Past years we have had Social and Rehabilitation Services, AARP, Community Action and many more participate in this celebration.
In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. The founder of National Grandparents day was Marian McQuade, who in 1970 initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for Grandparents. The day has a threefold purpose: to honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children and to help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer.
The Grandparent/CareGiver Support Group will also have a picnic lunch from 12:00–1:30pm. Local and surrounding area restaurants have donated toward the lunch. The Zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 5p.m. The gate closes at 4:30p.m.
Admission prices for the Topeka Zoo are $5.25 for adults, $4.25 for those ages 65 and over, $3.75 for children ages 3-12. Children ages 2 and under and Friends of the Zoo members are admitted free.
