Gardening tip 6: Moisture, fertilizer critical for beautiful lawns
9:27 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2006
The best time to put down new grass seed and fertilize it is between now and September 15, says Annette Jackson, co-owner of Jackson's Greenhouse.
Harvested seeds are just in, but prices have gone up a little because the dry weather in August hurt the harvest, she said. Grass seed grows in fields just like wheat, and then workers come in and harvest the seed from the plant to get the bags of grass seed you see in stores.
After the seeds are in your lawn, watering religously is critical for those seeds to grow.
For gardeners, now is a great time to plant greenbeans, turnups and beets.
In the flower garden, it's safe to plant prennials and irises, which will bloom next year.
Annette also says that as September brings cooler nights, the conditions are perfect for planting trees and shrubs that need warm soil, but cool air.
