Rare honey bee found in Pennsylvania
9:54 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2006
It could be a typical extermination case, but one local beekeeper in Pennsylvania recognized something unusual about these bees inside a local barn.
Entomologists are now excited about the discovery of the rare honey bees.
They're unique because they're semi-wild and have managed to survive for over 12 years
"Probably to raise some new queens off of these and hopefully this will help out all the beekeepers in the United States," said Bee Keeper Kevin Lutz.
The bees were removed from the barn on Sunday.
Some of the bees will be kept for research, others will be used to develop new colonies in different locations.
