Gardening Tip 9: Bring the outdoors inside during cold weather
11:24 a.m. Monday, November 20, 2006
Temperatures are expected to climb above 60 this week. So, that means gardeners have a few more days for their hobby outside, but it’s never too cold to enjoy gardening inside.
For green thumbs who want to continue their hobby through the winter, Annette Jackson suggests bringing the outdoors inside. Start hyacinths, or some similar plant with a bulb, in a jar inside. The jar must be shaped in a way that it will hold the bulb above water. The roots will grow into the water.
The co-owner of Jackson’s Greenhouse says it’s safe to plant bulbs, like tulips and daffodils. To give your landscape some color plant bushes, like a red twig dogwood. It’s safe to plant shrubs and trees during this window of warm weather, she said.
The time is now to fertilize those trees and shrubs.
And, don’t forget about the lawn. Annette says winterizers should be applied to the grass, but it’s too late to apply seed.
Also winterize your roses by pruning them back and covering the graft with soil.
