Local church has mercy on McEachron Elementary parents' pocketbooks

Buying school supplies for one child can be expensive, but how about 344 kids? That's exactly what members here at Light of the World Christian Center did for the students of McEachron Elementary.

Glue-check, pencils-check, crayons, new back pack-check, check.

It's about time for students to head back to class, which means parents, it's time to get out the cash for those school supplies. But with the average costs of supplies chalking up to $50 a kid...

"Public school used to be free," assistant pastor Darian Rains said.

Members of Light of the World Christian Center in Southwest Topeka decided to step-in to help trim costs for McEachron Elementary, which is just a few blocks away.

Supply Pick-up

Parents of McEachron Elementary students can pick up the supplies this Saturday, August 4th at Light of the World Christian Center from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. The address is 3301 SW Gage Blvd.

"We had to get a lot of back packs, a lot of school supplies. The parents that are coming to enrollment are like, 'Is this for real?!'" Rains said.

The church is supplying each student with a back pack full of school supplies, as well as dental, medical and vision screening tests.

I asked church leaders why sponsor an entire school.

"We just want to give back," Rains said.

"I knew the parents' mouths would probably be on the floor. They're just so thankful that they're willing to do something like that," McEachron Elementary principal Victor Williams said.

Here is the PDF list of supplies McEachron students will need. The check marks are the items the church has picked up, but parents do still need to get a few things, however. Those are the items that are dotted.
