Second body recovered from the Kansas River
5:41 p.m. Tuesday, August 7, 2007
Emergency crews worked around the clock, searching up and down the banks of the Kansas River for two men who went missing after their boat capsized. But extreme heat, dangerous waters and an uneven river bed made the situation even more difficult for rescue crews.
The call came in shortly before 7:30. A construction worker spotted a body under the Topeka Boulevard Bridge, just as rescue crews were getting ready to begin day two of recovery operations to find a missing boater, facing grueling conditions.
"It was extremely hot, extremely humid," Mission Township firefighter Chris Hamilton said.
Emergency agencies from around the county worked in shifts for more than 24 hours with temperatures soaring near 100 degrees. But that wasn't the only challenge crews faced.
"Limited visibility, the inability to see around kind of hampers things. We had limited access to some areas," Hamilton said.
Workers say while the search didn't end the way they hoped...
"We all came together and that's what it's about," Hamilton said.
