Hundreds cram the Expocentre for free dental work

A free dental clinic kicked off today, but dozens of people in need of dental work were in line last night. Some, who camped outside the Kansas Expocentre, woke up this morning to 5-degree temperatures.

Organizers of the clinic were turning patients away today, but they encouraged people to come out early Saturday. The event begins at 5 a.m., but dentist Kevin Cassidy, who, along with several others, is donating his services at the event, encourages people to get in line at 3 or 4 in the morning.

About 2,200 adults and children will come out to this two-dday event in Topeka. This special dental clinic is provided by Kansas Mission of Mercy. The clinics, which started in 2003, are held throughout the state.

Cassidy, also the co-chair for the Topeka Kansas Mission of Mercy, said over the five years about 10,000 patients have been treated, totally about $5 million in dental care.

The about 500 dental providers work with patients needing cleanings, fillings, tooth extractions and other work, and they do it all free of charge.

"We are not compensated in any way. We are giving up our time."

And, Topeka dentists will even provide some follow-up care for up to 10 days, he said.

"They need to call the Kansas Dentists Association, and we'll get them triaged to the correct dentist if they have any post-operative problems," Cassidy said.

Please help me get dental work. I am 46 years old and I have fifteen teeth that need to be pulled and get dentures. I am diabetic and all of my teeth are falling out. I have three kids and I know that they are embarrassed to be seen with me. I need help badly. Can you help me? I live in Texas Panhandle. I have no money because I am off work with no pay because of my health. I think if my teeth get fixed I will feel better.

Thank you

Pat
