Ichabods defeat Truman State in overtime

Senior forward Frank Phifer had his fourth double-double and reached 20 points for the third straight game as the Ichabods won 68-58 over Truman Saturday afternoon at Lee Arena. Junior guard Grant Hargett hit a 3-pointer late in regulation to lead to overtime and then the Ichabods ran away with it in their fourth overtime game to break a three-game losing streak and win at home for the first time since January 10. Washburn improved to 8-15 and 4-10 in the MIAA as it prepares to play three of the final four games on the road. The first contest will be Wednesday at Northwest Missouri with a 7:30 p.m. tip.
Phifer led all scorers with 24 points off 10-of-16 shooting and Hargett added 13 points with three 3-pointers. Junior forward Brady Sisk came off the bench to reach double figures for the sixth time this year as he scored 10.
Washburn scored the first basket but them fell behind quickly at the start. The Bulldogs had an eight-point lead, 14-6 at 11:19. The Ichabods then went on a 12-0 run to reclaim the lead. The run was capped by a lay-up from Sisk at 6:17 to give WU an 18-14 lead. The Ichabods held on as the half came to an end and went into the locker room up 29-24.
The Ichabods’ lead did not last long in the second half. The Bulldogs started the half on a 13-3 run to lead 39-32 at 12:05. The lead changed six times and their were six ties in the second half as both teams struggled to hold a lead.
Down by a point in the final minute Hargett connected on a 3 on a pass from inside from Sisk to put WU up 55-53. The Bulldogs called a timeout and then Austin Kirby’s lay-up tied the game and send it to overtime.
1:19 into the overtime period Phifer scored in the paint. After a TSU miss senior guard Michael Williams made a 3-pointer to put WU up by five. Washburn cruised from then out as the Bulldogs were just 1-of-6 from the field in the period and the Ichabods were 4-for-6 and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Williams’ pair of free throws in the final minute put the ’Bods up by 10.
The Ichabods overcame an eight-point lead midway through the first period and improved to 5-1 when leading at the 5:00 mark. They shot 42 percent during the game and 86 percent from the foul line.
The Bulldogs were perfect from the free throw line, 9-for-9, but shot just 38 percent during the game. Washburn won the rebound battle 39-32.
