Music and Lyrics
Hugh Grant plays Alex who at one time was an 80s pop music icon as one half of a successful group known as Pop. In the year 2007 Alex is no longer at the top of the charts and is relegated to playing his music at county fairs and amusement parks in an attempt to re-capture his glory of days.
With the comeback not going as well as planned suddenly Alex gets the opportunity to write a song for the current Britney Spears pop diva (Haley Bennett), and he will also get to record it with her as well. After a failed partnership with another writer to put the song together, Alex meets up Sophie (Drew Barrymore) who's watering his plants. While she's watering she begins to sing some lyrics that sound better to Alex than what he had on paper to this point. He asks Sophie to help write the song, because he's running out of time and this could be the last chance to him to re-launch his career.
Music and Lyrics is a terrific and surprising romantic comedy due in a big way to the chemistry of its two stars Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. I'm not the biggest Hugh Grant fan but he's very likeable, witty and charming as Alex. Another big surprise was that who knew Hugh Grant could actually sing? Barrymore is as sweet and likeable as ever and it was great to see her in a quality romantic comedy. She's an actress with talent who's survived early demons in her life and the destructive history of her talented family to build a successful career. I hope as she gets older there will be scripts given to her with some meaty parts so she can show that talent.
Director Marc Lawrence who also penned the script has well-written characters who like each other before there are any hints of romance. He allowed the trust and the friendship to form between the characters before the romance. There was no rush to that part of the story and the audience roots for these two people to succeed and be together
I also liked the opening to the movie and stay until the end because the credits include a play on the old VH1 series Pop Up Video. There are parts of the story that seem unbelievable, but throw that aside and go into a romantic comedy with heart, great characters, along terrific chemistry between two lead actors.
