Film Critic Keith Van Sickle provides his commentary on the best and worst of movies released in 2006.
The Best of 2006
1. The Departed (Scorsese, Nicholson, Matt Damon and finally a good performance from Leonardo DiCaprio in an intense and thoroughly entertaining film.)
2. Little Miss Sunshine ( A funny, sweet and touching comedy with a great script and outstanding performances.)
3. Pan's Labyrinth (Beautiful and memorizing adult fairy tale, should win best foreign language film. This movie will be watched and talked about in years to come.)
4. Half Nelson (Ryan Gosling as a teacher and basketball coach by day and a crack addict by night. This is one of the best films of the year with a Oscar worthy performance from Gosling)
5. United 93 (A movie that hits close to the heart of all Americans. A brave and outstanding job of directing from Paul Greengrass)
6. The Descent (One of the best and scariest horror movies of the last ten years.)
7. The Queen (Helen Miren stars as Queen Elizabeth in a role that should get her an Oscar and don't forget Michael Sheen who is exceptional as British Prime Minister Tony Blair.)
8. The Prestige (Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as rival magicians)
9. Casino Royale (Could be the best Bond films ever, and Daniel Craig is perhaps the best 007 to date)
10. Clerks II (This is a hilarious, raunchy, and at times sentimental follow up to the cult classic "Clerks." I laughed hard and often and its the funniest movie of the year.)
Worst of 2006
1. Little Man (One of the most pathetic big studio releases in some time and that's saying something)
2. Date Movie (If you took a date to Date Movie they would refuse to ever see you again!)
3. Basic Instinct 2 (Sharon Stone continues to show people how much she stinks as an actress and apparently she's proud of it, because it continues.)
4. Big Momma's House 2 (Martin Lawrence movies generally are experiments in terror and this is no exception!)
5. Tyler Perry's Medea's Family Reunion (Why?)
6. Black Dahlia (A convoluted, horrific mess that was to looney for its own good)
7. Black Christmas (Throats being slashed at Christmas time? Happy Holidays!)
8. Lady In The Water (M. Night Shyamalan is an egotistical hack, and his films continue to exploit that very fact. This was an excruciating movie to sit through, and it's a completely wasted the talented Paul Giamatti.)
9. Just My Luck (Lindsay Lohan needs to read scripts better.)
10. The Guardian (Ashton Kutcher must be stopped and was that Kevin Costner in the movie or a cardboard statue its hard to tell the difference.)
