Shawnee County Relay for Life holds make-up event

The Shawnee County Relay for Life committee is having a mini-relay rally on Friday, June 20 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel ballroom. The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m. The goal of the event is to finish up many of the activities that were cancelled during the first Relay for Life.
"We want to do the luminary ceremony the right way because we had to modify it. It is a big part of why survivors and their families come out. We need to honor that," Elsen said.
Things kickoff at 7 p.m. with the opening ceremony and survivor lap. That will be followed by a mini-kids carnival, silent auction and bingo. At 8 p.m. the luminary names start rolling for people to honor. The luminary ceremony will begin at 9:30.
The annual Relay for Life is an important event for the community, as many people suffer from cancer or have loved ones with the disease.
"It really brings the community together. It is as much an event as it is a fund raiser. Our funds are short this year. It is really important that we meet our goal so we can continue this fight. So we can educate, and provide research and services to Shawnee County cancer patients," Elsen said.
For people who still want to get involved, they can call the Shawnee County Relay for Life local office and purchase a luminary. Everyone is encouraged to attend the event and help support the American Cancer Society.
