Astronauts aboard Atlantis experience spacewalks to make repairs
10:45 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2007
The astronauts made their second spacewalk to fold up an old solar array on the international space station.
They also worked on a new section of the station that includes a new solar array. This will be used to help track the sun.
Atlantis astronauts Patrick Forrester and Steve Swanson had to finish the spacewalk early because the joint in the solar array was not properly responding to remote commands from Mission Control. They will have to finish the task on another spacewalk.
Astronauts will be repairing another part of the shuttle on Friday. They will be securing a peeled-back portion of the thermal blanket on the shuttle. To do this, astronauts will be using staples and pins found in the shuttles' medical kit. If this method fails, they will attempt to sew it into place using a stainless steel wire and a small needle-like instrument.
