St. Patrick's Day Parade route information

More than 25,000 people are expected to attend the city's St. Patrick's Day celebration in Downtown Topeka. While it's expected to be a jolly event, organizers have some words of caution for families attending the parade and for parade participants.

Parade entrants are asked not to throw candy, beads or any other objects from moving vehicles. Candy and other objects can be thrown onto sidewalks by those walking in the parade.

The crowd is urged to stay on the sidewalks and not move into the street. Organizers ask parents and guardians to keep children away from moving vehicles. Topeka Police officers will be on patrol to enforce these rules. Those not acting according to the rules can be kicked out.

Parade route

The St. Patrick's Day Parade will begin at noon at 8th and Jackson. The best views of the parade will be on either side of Kansas Avenue from 6th to 10th Street. Download a printable pdf of the parade route.

"It's a very dangerous situation with those moving vehicles," said Pat Finan, an organizer for the city's St. Patrick's Day Festivities. "We've had kids actually step out in front of floats before to get candy."

Also, Topeka Police will notify all parked cars along Kansas Avenue about the “No Leave” rule until trail of parade has passed by northbound.

Beginning at 10 A.M.,parade entrants are asked to enter at 5th and Topeka, head one block east to Harrison and head south on Harrison. They will be directed toward the staging area by volunteers. There is no cost to participate, but entrants are asked to bring a canned food good for Project Topeka.

For those wanting to watch the parade, it begins at noon at 8th and Jackson. From there, the parade goes north to 6th Street and turn east to Kansas Avenue. Kansas Avenue from 6th to 10th Street will be a prime spot for viewing the parade as the parade will make a double pass down both sides of Kansas Avenue. Then, the parade travels west on 6th and ends at 8th and Harrison.
