Wakarusa, KS The people of Wakarusa spent Mother's Day fishing through soggy, water-logged items in their homes - trying to salvage what they could. For one family, a Mother’s Day gift helped to raise their spirits, even if there is still a long way to go before things return to normal.
"Today is the first day we've had a break. We appreciate them,” said flood victim Wanda Myers.
Wanda and her husband, Ray, were sent packing when their home was devastated by the flood. But the help of friends and family have given them hope.
"When there's a natural disaster in the Midwest, people are stepping in to help,” says Wanda and Ray’s son, Brad, who has been helping his parents clean up the home.
While this certainly isn't the type of Mother's Day she ever dreamed she'd get, Wanda and her family say at least they’re with the people who mean the most to them.
"I just get to spend a little extra time with mom," says daughter Cherida Dewitt.
