New clues may have surfaced at an El Dorado Motel where police are looking for a missing Kansas college student. Police believe 18-year-old Emily Sander was the victim of violence. The manager of the motel told police there may have been a fight there, but investigators aren't saying what they found when they searched the room over the weekend. Sander was last seen Friday at a bar east of El Dorado. Police say she left with 24-year-old Israel Mireles, after the two were seen "friendly together at the bar." Police are looking for him and his 16-year-old girlfriend. They don't believe Sander is traveling with them.
A traffic stop uncovers nearly 120 pounds of marijuana. That led to a foot chase involving helicopters and K-9 units. It happened just before 8 a.m., at I-70 and Valencia road in Shawnee County. Two men were stopped. The car with Georgia plates was not registered to either of the men. Officers arrested the driver, but the passenger took off running. Police dogs tracked him into an area of trees where he was taken into custody.
Athletes who train hard and pump iron will be pumping millions of dollars into the local economy as well. About 2,000 athletes will be in Lawrence for a national Ironman triathlon. It's expected to bring in $2 to $3 million. The event is called the "Ironman 70.3 Kansas." The June 15 race will serve as a qualifier for the Ironman World Championships and the National Collegiate Ironman Championship. The average salary for an Iron man is $140,000 a year.
Paper or plastic? At most grocery stores in our area, you have the option. But if you want paper, you have to ask for it. If Kansas follows a national trend those plastic bags could be on the way out. Grocery shoppers in San Francisco are adapting to a city-wide ban on the plastic bags. The mayor says it's one way to keep their city clean. "When they double-bag with plastic, and they bring 10 or 15 of these things home. They have to realize where these things go, and they end up in landfills. And they don't biodegrade," San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said.
