Christmas Bureau offers holiday help

When Walter Glaude fell on hard times, Topeka was there for him.

Around Christmas time, he was strapped for cash. So, he signed up for the Christmas Bureau, a service provided by the United Way of Greater Topeka.

Today is the last day individuals can sign up for the Christmas Bureau.

Glaude said turning to charities for a little extra help during the holidays was nothing to be ashamed of.

"All kind of things happen to people that gives them a bump in the road," he said. "If you need help, get help, and then help someone else."

That's what the certified credit counselor with Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc. will be doing.

He said next year he'll donate to the Christmas Bureau to help out a family in need.

About 4,000 individuals have signed up so far this year. You can adopt a family by calling (785) 273-4804.

The last day to sign up for the Christmas Bureau is today. You can sign up until 4 p.m. at the Sweet Building, 622 Southwest Topeka Blvd. You can also call the United Way of Greater Topeka at (785) 273-4804.

You have to bring the Social Security cards for each member of the family.
