New club skates into Capital City

— Colin and Ginger Bennett love to take advantage of the $5 open sessions at the Expocentre. But they wish there were more open sessions available since there is no full-time skate rink in Topeka. They aren't alone; others like little Ragen Hornbrook feel the same way.

"It's almost my favorite thing to do," says Hornbrook.

"We have some people who used to pair skate and some people who used to figure skate and they have to drive to Kansas City," says Ginger Bennett.

Another skater, Tammy, believes it would be nice for something year round to show up in Topeka, and that's why they got together to start the the Capital City Figure Skating Association: to bring those who have a love of skating together to share their passion. The news of a new skate club took "chill thrillseeker" Ragen aback.

One of the reasons Colin and Ginger started the skating club was to give folks who love to skate more time to do what they love. Another reason is give those really good skaters time to show off.

"You can put similar skaters with similar abilities together. So they can do jumps and spins and skate to music," says Colin.

Plus the possibility of the new "Topeka Ice" rink could bring even more opportunities for skating.

The Bennets hope the skate club will especially encourage young kids to fall in love with skating. And Colin's experience as a competitive figure skater and skating coach could come in handy for future hopeful medalists like Ragen.

This is the third official figure skating club in the state of Kansas. Ginger and Colin hope to have a kickoff for the club within the next couple of weeks.

For more information on the club, you can contact Colin or Ginger by email at colin@colinandginger.com and ginger@colinandginer.com.
