Directory for companies pledging not to hire illegal immigrants hits the Web

In the volatile debate over illegal immigration, one grassroots organization is standing up for businesses that follow the law.

ProAmerica Companies, a non-profit organization founded three months ago, focuses its efforts on companies that promise not to hire illegal immigrants.

"We take a look at who's doing things right. Let's promote those companies. Let's do business with them," said ProAmerica Companies founder David Marlett. "Yes, it may cost us a little bit more to get that room painted, but we're not committing a felony in the process."

He said the promotion of businesses committed to following the law sends a positive message to young, American entrepreneurs and emphasizes personal responsibility.

He has set up a Web site that lists about 500 companies in 43 states that have promised not to hire illegal immigrants.

"As we grow, they will be able to find more," he said.

Watch the video interview above to hear what he has to say about the impact hiring illegal immigrants has on the economy.

This is a terrific idea, and I wish ProAmerica founder huge success. There have been law-abiding roofers in my community put out of business by unscrupulous competitors cherry picking jobs and using cheap, illegal labor and then moving on. Our nation will never know how many decent small firms went under.
