49's Voice of the Voter: On mudslinging
2:49 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2008
As we follow events leading up to the 2008 election, we want to make sure we're covering the issues that matter to you, so we've gathered together a group of citizens of different backgrounds and political views to help us stay on track.
We started by asking the group if mudslinging was something they paid attention to.
“I know the part I pay attention to isn't necessarily the mudslinging part of it,” Renner said.
He went on to say what matters to him is whether there's any truth to that mud.
“That's the kind of thing I want to see is they get called on what the truth is as opposed to weather or not somebody misstated something or makes a gaffe,” he said.

The conversation quickly turned to the criticism of Senator Barack Obama for controversial remarks made by his minister.
"You can't spend 20 years going to a church and not share some of those views. And if he ever shared any of those views, I don't want him being President of the United States,” Doug McHatton said.
Our college student, James Meier, agreed.
You don't go to a church for 20 years without knowing some of that stuff's going on,” Meier added.
“I can see where he [Obama] would align himself with Rev. Wright from an ecclesiastical perspective and disagree with him on the secular issues,” Bennie Davis said.
“Those issues that are coming out are all secular, too,” James Meier added.
“I agree with that. I just think he made a point to discuss how he wasn't at this speech or that speech, he didn't hear this or that,” Meier said.
But Claudia Hamer credited Obama for being up front.
“How are you going to throw mud at that?” she asked.
“Back to the mud-slinging issue, regardless of whether you support Obama or not, the mud is going to reappear,” McHatton concluded.
And that was the verdict: whether you believe what's being said or not, once it's out there, it tends to stick.
