Community center holds fundraiser to raise dough

Last week a community center in Southeast Topeka suffered major budget cuts.
The city cut funding for the LULAC Senior Center by $13,000.
The United Way cut another $14,000.
"A lot of them were distressed when we found out what the city did because they didn't know if we were closing or if we are gonna keep up the same quality of service," LULAC Director Jo Salehar said.
But some hope was restored to Local League of United Latin American Center.
Shawnee County agreed to give the organization $13,000.

"It's relieved a lot of the concern the seniors had," Salehar said.
Now, LULAC is raising their own money.
"We picked up the phone and called them; they were more than willing to help out," LULAC board member Robert Soria said.
The fundraiser was held at Cici's Pizza on Southwest Topeka Boulevard.
CiCi's manager Ron Jordan said he was happy to offer a piece of the pie.
"Anything to help the community, you know, any help that anyone can give right now is very important," Jordan said.
One way the money will be used is to fund the center's bus service.
"Topeka LULAC Senior Center is the number one provider of transportation services to seniors in Topeka, Kansas," Soria said.
The bus gets them to doctors' appointments and to run their errands.
And with the cuts and high gas prices that service could have gone by the wayside.
"With gas prices going up this year too, we really felt the crunch," Soria said.
For LULAC, every penny counts.
"Any little money that we can get will help," Salehar said.
