Gymnastics coach charged with child sex abuse

A coach at a local gymnastics studio is now charged in connection with a sexual assault.

49-year-old David Byrd, of Topeka, is charged with indecent liberties with a 14-year-old child and criminal restraint. The victim was a gymnast student at the gym, Shawnee County District Attorney Robert Hecht said.

Byrd coaches at the Gym Zone, 3526 SE 21st St., where authorities say the assault allegedly happened August 24.

Police are searching Byrd's cell phone and computers as part of the investigation.

He's incarcerated in the Shawnee County Jail where he is being held on a $100,000 bond.

49 News went by Gym Zone Wednesday evening. A sign on the door read it was closed until further notice.
