Awards, honorees and state testing all happening in USD 501

Last week was the big announcement of Dr. Kevin Singer as the new superintendent of USD 501. Dr. Singer officially starts his new duties on July 1.
A couple of 501 schools won Best Buy Teach Awards. Highland Park High School and Scott Elementary School each receive $2,000 to buy equipment for their schools. Of course, they'll do their shopping at Best Buy.
At Thursday's Board of Education meeting, the district's Friends of Education will be honored. Friends of Education are citizens, groups and businesses that support and are actively involved in our schools. Those who will be recognized Thursday night are Carolyn Campbell, a former board member who is now a school volunteer, CiCi's Pizza for their partner activity and the Topeka-Shawnee County Public Library for their hosting of a number of district events.
Harbaugh has a reminder for parents. 'Tis the season for state assessments, so make sure your students are well-rested and have eaten a healthy breakfast before state testing.
On February 29, McEachron Elementary will hold a Dr. Seuss Birthday Reading Party.
On April 10 is Kindergarten Roundup except for Williams Magnet School.
Also, March 17-21 is Spring Break, hard to believe it is here again.
