Today is the day Kansas Jayhawk fans have been waiting for all season and for some all their lives. Tonight's Orange Bowl game is KU's first appearance in any BCS bowl game. Of course, Lawrence is Jayhawk country, but you can find a few Virginia Tech Hokie fans there. Several couples in Lawrences have ties to Virginia Tech and none of them shy away from representing their old alum. So, which bird do they think is going to win the big game? "I think Virginia Tech will win but only because they have a little bit more of a football tradition than we do," transfer student Krista Miller said. "I think we're going to win. It's going to be a close, hard fought game," VA Tech alum Justin Smit said. "The Hokies are going to win," VA Tech alums Steve and Ashley Strand said. Kick-off is tonight at 7:00 on FOX.
Fruit growers and bowl fans are all dealing with surprisingly cold temperatures. KU fans had to bundle up in sweatshirts as they hit the beach Wednesday. Some were disappointed they weren't able bask in the sun before the Orange Bowl. But others were much more optimistic about the weather."It's beautiful. It's beautiful. You realize it's 45 degrees warmer right now here than it is at home," said one Florida visitor. Fruit growers were not as optimistic. They kept an eye on their citrus groves through the night as temperatures were expected to dip into the teens and 20s.
Charges have been filed against a Topeka hunter accused of killing 18 year old Beau Arendt. The Emporia State freshman was goose hunting when he was shot in northern Lyon County last month. The Lyon County attorney says Thomas Kent turned himself in. The charges against him include involuntary manslaughter, criminal discharge of a firearm and criminal hunting. Deputies say Kent was in a truck and shot at goose decoys when he hit Arndt. Shooting from inside a vehicle is illegal in Kansas.
Clean up crews could be at your curb sooner than you think. Here's a map showing the progress crews have made picking up limbs after the ice storm. Neighborhoods in purple are all cleaned up. Crews have been working in north Topeka and east Topeka since the storm began. The yellow shows where crews are now. And orange is where they're headed. Now the City is looking to pick up the pace and could be headed to your neighborhood. Crews have been working in Southeast and Northeast Topeka, two of the hardest hit areas. But if the weather holds out, those in Central Topeka could be coming up sooner than you might think. "We've got enough crews available now that we can do four five sections at a time," said Adam Moser of Topeka Parks and Rec. "We'll take a swath of the city and take a section and move over and then move over." Moser says cleanup could be done by the end of January. The best way to keep on top of the limb removal is to check out the city's website.
