State health officials say the number of reported salmonella cases in south-central Kansas is at least 19, 11 of them in Harvey County.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said this week that a Newton restaurant is the probable source of the disease. The 19 were hit by Salmonella Enteritidis, a different type of the disease than the nationwide outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul.
A KDHE news release said Acapulco Restaurant in Newton is the probable source of the illness.
Health officials are trying to pinpoint the source of the illness by talking to patrons who showed symptoms of salmonella as well as those who did not after eating at the restaurant.
