No savings at the Farmers' Market over the grocery store

We've done the math and found you won't spend less money shopping at our local Farmer's Market compared to what it costs you at the grocery store.

That didn't seem to bother folks shopping at the Farmer's Market today.

It's a downtown Topeka tradition on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

So, if you're not saving any money and you're spending extra on the gas to get there, why do so many people love the farmer's market?

"Well, it helps support the farmers and we know it's from Kansas," shopper Maxine James said.

"The quality is really great. It's just, everything here is so fresh. And it's just really wonderful, so I make it every week," shopper Sabrina Young said.

As we said, we did the math to compare food prices.

And that's just the beginning.

This month, KTKA is focused on finding new money saving secrets for you.

Keep watching for easy advice that will mean more money in your wallet.

Our special reports begin this Sunday on 49 news at 10.

I'm not sure how the math was done but I think it should be re-calculated. There are things at the Farmer's Market that are much cheaper than the grocery store. One example is zucchini and yellow squash. They were 4 for $1.00 at the market yesterday and at the store they are a dollar a pound. Some of the zucchini at the farmer's market weigh 2 pounds each. If my math is right that would be 25 cents at the farmer's market and it would cost you $2.00 at the grocery store. What makes the produce from the farmer's market even better is that it is usually picked the day before or the day of the market, while the stuff in the grocery store is much older. While there may be times where the grocery store is cheaper is it not correct to say that you won't save money if you attend the local farmers' market.
