Community generosity brings improved mobility to Ray Santin

A few adjustments here...and a few more there...and Ray Santin is ready to start a new chapter in his life.

"Gonna take a little bit of time to get adjusted to."

A chapter that will allow him to have more mobility in his brand new wheelchair.

"I'm ready to get out in the open and see how fast it'll actually go," Ray said.

Ray is just one of five families saying thank you this Sunday after viewers like you pitched in to help improve their lives. It began with a challenge to see how much good we could do in our community. Join us on Sunday as we highlight what the community has given back to these five families. You will also have the opportunity to give back to the community yourself. It's all part of our Community Keeps Giving special. You can catch it Sunday at 6:00 right here on 49 ABC.

But before Ray takes over the world, seating specialist Paul Wilkie showed him the wheelchair's new features.

"It's an upgrade from the base which provides a little bit better shock absorption and a little bit better from an electronic stand point," Wilkie said. "Should be a little bit more durable and little bit smoother for him when he's outside."

A car crash in 1995 left Ray paralyzed from the neck down.

His old chair was nearly 13 years-old. Ray got this $10,000 chair for free.

"It was really good to be able to provide a service where normally, unfortunately with Ray's insurance, he wouldn't be able to get this chair," Wilkie said.

"Feels good to have a new one finally. I'm really appreciative of it," Ray said.
