49's Voice of the Voter: The economy

Our panel speaks out on number one issue affecting voters this election

Democrats and Republicans populate the 49 News Voice of the Voter panel. From a retired steelworker to a college student, we have selected real people to give us real thoughts on the upcoming election. We think our panel will reflect a wide range of views and a wide range of opinions.

It certainly seems like opinions will be plentiful from our group. We had our first meeting this week; the big topic: The economy

"Saving jobs, saving blue collar jobs," Bennie Davis said. "And I'm concerned about all the exporting of the jobs. 1:13

Keith Renner said presidential candidates cannot dodge the issue, especially this year.

"I think the economy's always one of the top issues in any campaign, and this year it's getting to the point where it's going to be a serious issues for anyone who's running for president," Renner said.

Doug McHatton agreed the economy was always a hot topic, but wasn't sure he wanted politicians trying to manage it.

"The free market is always going to manage that better than the government does no matter if it's a Democrat or a Republican in the office," McHatton said.

Our student, James Meier, was the only one in the group who didn't think the health of the economy impacted his life.

"I think your ability to get a job is all dependent on you and your abilities and you as a person," he said.

The others didn't agree on a solution, but they say they expect to see it at the forefront of the presidential campaigns.
