If you are a high school football fan, circle tonight's feature game of the night, Hayden and Junction City, as one to look forward to all year. Both teams were undefeated and the winner of this game will be in the driver's seat to win the Centennial League. This was a playoff game in regular season form. Out to Junction City we go as the Cats take on the Blue Jays. The Jays played well in the first half. Ty Zimmerman tossed Conner Gallentine for an eighteen yard touchdown strike, putting JC on top, 7-0. Then Zimmerman took it to the house all by himself on a punt return down the sideline. What can't this coach's kid do? He throws touchdowns, returns punts...Junction City had a thirteen point lead in the first half. And the Jays would fight off a late Hayden surge. They take it, 22-14.
It was homecoming at Manhattan, nursing a 7-3 lead against Shawnee Heights. Manhattan came up big in the fourth quarter on a Shawnee Heights punt. Sophomore Jordan Nelson took it from his own end zone to the Shawnee Heights 45 yard line for a big gain. Later, Derek Campbell punched in for the touchdown. Manhattan took this one, 13-3.
Out to Highway 24 we go, where unbeaten St. Marys and Silver Lake went at it for Mid-East League dominance. Lake Coach CJ Hamilton was looking for victory number 300.Pick it up early in the second quarter, Tyler Roberts rolled to his right, looking down field and found Derek Bledsoe, who fakes the defender out of his shoes. He walked in for the score. Silver Lake was out front, 7-0. But the Bears clawed back. Gatlin Jacobsen showed he can throw on the run as well, rolling out to his right and finding Luke Olsen, who takes it down inside the 20. St. Marys knocked on the door a few plays later. Jacobsen again faked the hand off, rolled and threw it to the endzone, but Silver Lake's DJ Johnson cames down with it for the touchback. Hello win 300 for coach Hamilton as the Eagles flew away with this one, 36-14.
Welcome to Wabaunsee High, where it's okay to throw t-shirts to screaming fans. They had good reason to scream, at least on this play, as 5'3" Ridge Davis came up big with the interception off of Calvin Kenney, but the Chargers go three and out. Riley County had good field position after the punt. Kinney dropped back, waited, waited, waited, SACKED hard. Later, Kinney handed off to Jacob Hagenmaier, who nosed into the endzone to make it 41-0 in favor of the the Riley County Falcons, who go on to a 48-8 victory.
Rossville hosted Rock Creek tonight. On the opening kick, Tanner Cady followed his blockers, showed some speed, made a few moves, then coughed up the ball, which Rock Creek recovered. The Mustangs demonstrated why turnovers are generally bad. Dustin Minor plowed through the middle to pay dirt. Rock Creek's was up 8-0 early. In the second quarter, it was Dustin Minor again. This time, he took the pitch, got some good downfield blocking and scampered into the endzone, where he recieved hearty congratulations from his peers. Rock Creek was all over Rossville, 43-14.
Washburn Rural hosted Highland Park for Washburn's Homecoming. Early in the third quarter, Trent Annan passed it off to Andrew Edwards, who made it about 10 yards only to be taken down by a tag team of Rashwan Baker and Robbie Wheeler. Later in third quarter, a pass to Luke Joliff, but he only made it a few yards before Dalaney Roberts took him down. Near end of the third quarter, Trent Annan handed it off to Luke Joliff again, who broke through for a 30 yard touchdown run. Washburn Rural would go on to win this one over the Scots, 49-7.
It was the battle of T-Town, Topeka High taking on Topeka West for city bragging rights. Pick it up early in the third quarter, Cameron Turner got the rock and banged his way through the line, got loose and was off to the races for the senior running back. He tried to cut back to get to the endzone, but was finally brought down at about the 25. Then four plays later, Turner, again on the pitch play, turned it up field and bulled his way into paydirt. The Chargers would miss the point after. T-High led 20-6. On the next possesion, the Trojans show they can run the ball as well. Riley Williams went off tackle and on his horse and got down inside the 20. T-High couldn't convert on this drive, but it wouldn't matter. They won the T-Town title, Trojans take it 20-6.
Royal Valley hosted Sabetha...Royal Valley's Gabe Schultz threw a pass that was intercepted by Jesse Grimm, but it doesn't last long. Royal Valley got the ball back. Gabe Schultz handed it off to Travis Miller who broke through the pack to make a 70-yard touchdown run. Making the score 14-7, Royal Valley. Later, it's Gabe Schultz again, this time he faked a pass and ran 30 yards before being taken down. And Royal Valley takes the win, 35-13.
