Tonight's game of the week has no bearing on the Centennial League race, but both teams want to go into district playing on a good note.
Out to Heights we go, the T-Birds hosting the Trojans. DJ Wakes hands it off to Cody Harrison for a 6 yard run, putting them on the 2 yard line. On the next play, they punch it in, making it 7-0, T-high. Later in the quarter, Sam Vossen takes the snap and chucks it deep to Garrett Bower, who makes a great grab. With that 22 yard touchdown pass, we're all squared at seven. In the second quarter, the Trojans have to punt the ball. Matt Kobbeman is back to receive it and T-high will be sorry they didn't kick this one out of bounds. Kobbeman just finds a seam and goes and no one is going to catch this kid. He runs it back for a 95 yd TD. This game would be full of big plays, and Heights ends the two game slide. They win it, 27-14.
It was junior Viking cheerleaders in training at Seaman as Junction City held a slim 14 to 12 lead at the half. The Blue Jays added to their lead as quarterback Ty Zimmerman takes it in himself to make it 21 to 12 with the extra point in the fourth quarter. JC would win this one, 21-15.
Back down Hwy. 75 as Hayden hosts Highland Park. The Wildcats get out the gate quick in this one and force the Scots to go three and out on their possession. On Hayden's first touch of the game, Elliot Konrade takes it to the house from 28 yards out. The Cats scratch first, 7-0. Later in the quarter, McGreevey fakes the end around, keeps and finds Rick Rineberg in the back of the endzone for the ten yard TD strike. Hayden jumps out in front, 14-0. More Cat scratch fever, Hayden gets down to the one and Raymond Gragg casually takes into pay dirt for another score. The Wildcats run away with this one, 63-0.
The Holton band barely had time to get their musical groove on before the Wildcats started their first scoring drive. Number 20, senior Jordan Moseley takes it in from the red zone for an early 7 to 0 lead. Sabetha answered right back. From the 13 yard line, quarterback Mitch Allen calls his own number and runs it in himself to knot it at 7 all. Holton was not going to stand still for that. They retake the lead as Dalton Harshaw punches it in from the 2. The Cats scratch away with this one, 42-28
We come back to the Capitol City as Topeka West hosts Washburn Rural for homecoming. In the beginning of the second quarter, the Chargers were down 21-0. Tyrell Brown fakes the sweep to Cameron Turner and gives it to Aaron Plump. He breaks a tackle and turns on the jets and gets down to their 48. But four plays later, the Chargers would be forced to punt. Later, Washburn Rural driving as Trent Annan hooks up with Tate Vobach on the slant route which would set up Andrew Edwards, who goes up the gut and to the house, no one catching this guy, for a 45 yard touchdown scamper. Washburn Rural upsets Topeka West's homecoming, 35-0.
Rossville hosting Wabaunsee, and Wabaunsee is desperate for some offense in the second quarter. Going for it on fourth down, Kyler Cook eludes one tackler, keeps his head downfield, but there must have been some coverage as Spencer Askren asks Cook how DOES that dirt taste? After the failed 4th down, Rossville has the ball. Mitch Buhler to Matt Buhler, who just hangs on and works his way a little further downfield. A little less flashy now as big Robert Cooper bowls in for six. That makes it 35-0 Rossville. The Dawgs were just getting warmed up, they go on to take it 56-8.
Staying out west on Hwy. 24 for Mid East League action, St. Marys hosting Rock Creek. In the first quarter, Creek's Dustin Miner takes the pitch and shows us the meaning of running north and south, turns on the after burners and 79 yards later, that's good for a Mustangs touchdown. Rock Creek is up 7-0. Later in the quarter, St. Marys answers. Brandon Tyler takes a pitch of his own and goes up and over a defender and picks up 36 yards. That would lead to Gatlin Jacobsen calling his own number, and finding his way into the endzone to tie things up 7-7. There were big plays all over the place in this one as the Mustangs edge out the Bears, 26-21.
Perry-Lecompton taking on Piper...In the first quarter with no score, the Pirates fumble, the Kaws recover. Trenton Rob has it. Then Shane Gimzo takes over on the QB keeper, gets to the pile-on, making it 7-0 Kaws. With :30 left in the first, Gimzo again with the touchdown, 14-0. In the third quarter, again it's Gimzo off and running to make it 21-0 Perry. The Kaws fly away with this one, they win 28-13.
Jeff West hosting Maur Hill for homecoming. In the third quarter, homecoming king Kyle Sanders take the snap for Jeff West, throws it long, but Maur Hill's Bryce Hundley is there for the pick. Later in the quarter, Sanders hands it off to Garrett Stewart for a 9 yard run, putting them in good field postion. Once again, Stewart gets the hand off from Sanders and punching it in for a 5 yard TD. The Tigers take this one, 49-0.
