If you were pretty good at math in school, everyone knows the key to algebra is equations, like the Pythagorean theorem and the quadratic equation.
But to figure out the storyline to this week's featured game, all you need to know is basic math.
Hayden and Emporia combined for 71 points in their Week 1 victories, so this week you could probably expect a high scoring affair when the Spartans and Wildcats face off.
Out to Hayden we go. Pick it up mid-first quarter, big Raymond Gragg gets the rock and bowls over not one, but two defenders on his way to pay dirt. The Cats would miss the extra point, making it 6-0 Hayden. But the Spartans would come charging back. Moments later, Taylor Euler fakes the give and gives it to himself and races untouched to the endzone. However, the Wildcats would scratch back. Elliot Konrade takes around the outside and gets down the two. And TJ McGreevy takes it in on the QB keeper for six. Hayden would roll on to win 26-7.
To Bishop Stadium where Highland Park was hosted by Manhattan. Highland Park kicked off in the third. It was recovered by Jordan Nelson who rans it to the 1 yard line for a 36 yard return. Later, Blair Debord hands it off to Garrett Hess who takes it in for a 1 yd TD, 33-0. In the fourth, Highland Park was trying to make a play. Marquel Gaines gets the hand off and makes a 19 yd run for a 1st down. The Indians would win this one, 46-0.
Even the reptiles were looking for somewhere drier to take in the Sabetha at Jefferson West game. Tiger quarterback Kyle Sanders tried to get something going early with wide-receiver Cole Buckman. But weather conditions and turnovers kept Jeff West out of the endzone for the first half. A completion to Sabetha's Lane Koch was not enough to punch it into the endzone either as both teams struggled to no scores at halftime. Eventually, Sabetha would score, and they take it, 6-0.
Topeka West was on the road to Junction City. In the first quarter, Ty Zimmerman goes back for a pass and connects with Brandon Martino for a 30 yard TD, 14-0 the score. Later, Ty Zimmerman takes the snap and a quick pass to Benjamin Grice for a 4 yard TD, 21-0. Topeka West has the ball on 7 and goal. Where did the ball go: The fumble recovered by Chris Toombs who ran it back for a 93 yard TD, 27-0. In the end, Junction City rolls over T-West, 55-0.
Silver Lake hosted Rock Creek Friday. Silver Lake goes for it on 4th down. QB Tyler Roberts in the shotgun looks to his left, nothing there, scrambles right, runs right past a few defenders and leaps into the endzone for 6 that puts Silver Lake up 20-12. On the kickoff, it's raining, the ball slips loose and Gabe Battis is there to pounce on it. But Silver Lake makes 'em pay when Adam Wetzel rumbles into the endzone, 27-12. The Eagles soar away with this one, 28-12.
Soggy conditions plaqued the Washburn Rural at Seaman game. With the Vikings down by one at the half, junior Tyler Lutz was preparing for the second half. Spencer Vaderbogart connected on this play for a long gain. The drive stalled out and the field goal was blocked. Neither team scored in the third quarter. Washburn Rural went on to win, 7-6.
Next up, we go to Hummer Sports Park where the umbrellas were out in full force for Topeka High-KC Harmon. Late in the second quarter, T-High was down inside the 20. Sam Johnson with the play action pass, rolls out and finds Rapheal Stephens for the easy touchdown. The Trojans were way out in front, 30-0. More T-High, as Harmon punts from their own end zone and the kicked was blocked by Riley Williams. Marcus Kidd will pick it up for the Hawks and take out of the side of the end zone for the safety. More Williams, Riley again, doing it on the ground this time, taking it in from seven yards out. Topeka High rolled in this one, 58-0.
Hiawatha was at Wamego, and in play action, Nick Johnson to Michael Adams, who walks it in for 6, making it 39-0 Wamego. Not much was going right for Hiawatha as Caleb Lenon fumbles the snap and it's gobbled up by Wamego's Brandon Gober. A few plays later, Colby Jackson takes it to the house, making it 45-0. Wamego was up big near the end of the first half. In the end, It's all Wamego, 46-0.
